Know your operating state

The Burnout–Flourish Spectrum is a simple way for independent consultants to see where they are actually operating across life, business and vitality before pressure starts to shape decisions.

Why this matters

Most consultants don’t burn out suddenly.

They drift.

They plan growth assuming they’re operating at full strength.

A few weeks later:

  • energy dips
  • delivery feels heavier
  • progress slows
  • relationships feel the strain

Not because they lack discipline.

Because they misread their starting point.

What the Spectrum does

It answers one question:

Where am I really operating from right now?

Not emotionally.

Operationally.

Across:

  • life
  • business
  • vitality

When that’s clear, everything changes.

  • decisions become more grounded
  • energy is used more deliberately
  • pressure reduces
  • progress becomes more consistent

You stop planning based on who you think you should be and start from where you actually are.

The four zones

You’ll move between these over time.

That movement is normal and useful.

🔴 Zone 1 — Burnout

Demand has exceeded recovery for too long.

What it looks like:

  • constant fatigue
  • slower thinking
  • reduced care towards work
  • shorter patience with clients or at home

What’s needed:

Not optimisation — space.

Reduce load. Create breathing room. Let recovery begin.

🟡 Zone 2 — Surviving

You’re functioning, but stretched.

What it looks like:

  • work spilling into evenings
  • reactive marketing
  • inconsistent recovery
  • always slightly behind

What’s needed:

Stabilise before expanding.

Contain workload. Build structure. Strengthen recovery.

🟠 Zone 3 — Stabilising

Things are improving.

What it looks like:

  • clearer boundaries
  • more proactive work
  • less firefighting
  • better consistency

What’s needed:

Protect what's working.

Build repeatedly before pushing forward.

🟢 Zone 4 — Flourishing

Energy, structure and clarity are aligned.

What it looks like:

  • strong rhythm across work and life
  • confident decisions
  • capacity for growth
  • space beyond work

What’s needed:

Stay aware.

Review regularly. Avoid drift.

Why this matters in practice

Without a clear reference point, most consultants guess.

With one, they measure.

That changes everything.

The Spectrum helps you:

  • avoid pushing for growth too early
  • recognise when stabilisation is needed
  • catch pressure before it builds
  • and track progress over time

Start with measurement

The Check-In maps your position across:

  • life
  • business
  • vitality

You’ll receive:

  • your current zone
  • a score across each domain
  • a personal breakdown of what’s going on
  • and clear next steps based on that

No generic advice.

A clear starting point.

[Start your check-in]

Burnout rarely begins with collapse.

It begins with misreading your operating state.
